Maths

Mathematics is taught at St Aidan's everyday. In the Foundation Stage it is referred to as Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy and children seek patterns, make connections, recognise relationships and work with numbers, shapes, space and measures. They also count, sort and match. They use their knowledge and skills to solve problems.
In KS1 AND KS2 children cover seven strands of objectives:
- Using and applying mathematics
- Counting and understanding numbers
- Knowing and using number facts
- Calculating
- Understanding shape
- Measuring
- Handling data
The curriculum is delivered in 5 blocks in line with the Primary Framework for Mathematics:
- Counting, partitioning and calculating
- Securing number facts and shape
- Handling data and measures
- Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
- Securing number facts, relationships and calculating
Teachers encourage the children to learn their times tables and have short daily mental maths sessions. A variety of tools are used for the delivery of mathematics teaching, including games, puzzles, books, interactive whiteboard and computer programmes to name a few. Teachers take into account children's learning styles and levels of ability and alter their teaching accordingly, sometimes even taking the teaching and learning into the local environment!
Support programmes are available for those pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 who need them. Booster classes are given in Year 6. Identified Gifted and Talented children benefit from differentiated work within their classrooms. Children and parents in Years 2, 5 and 6 are invited to attend after school Maths sessions to help with their understanding of how Mathematics is taught in our school.
