Summer Music Concert

St Aidan’s KS2 Summer Concert – July 11th

By Shelley Malcolm

Proms Tickets? Who needs them when we have evenings like this to attend in our very own neighbourhood. An excellent summer concert was hosted recently in our assembly hall showcasing the musical talents of the junior pupils.

The evening began with offerings from our recording stars, The St Aidan’s Choir who get louder and stronger every year and they embellished their songs with some beautiful and complex harmonies.

Eight children from Year Three performed a delightful selection of short piano pieces as well as one violin piece and a lovely guitar piece called Fiesta by Jakaya. All of the performers showed an amazing degree of concentration and determination.

Year Four offered two accomplished piano pieces by Carla and Sina, a guitar piece by Jamie and then rather surprisingly a devil (Carla) and an angel (Elise) appeared on stage to sing Devil in Disguise. The audience were thrilled.

After the interval and refreshing drinks, Year Five (easily the largest contributing year) kicked off their mixed session with a solo from Sophie who sang ‘Valerie’. Then we were treated to several piano pieces of varying difficulty from Molly, Amelia, Melanie and Deniz, a short cello duet from Kaya and Elizabeth, a violin piece from Francesca and a blues piece for the bassoon from Eddie who is clearly getting on very well with a difficult and rather wonderful instrument. All played well and with great confidence. There were two more vocal efforts which deserve a mention and they were Ruby singing Don’t Know why’ which brought a tear to my eye and Beatrice (accompanied by her father on guitar) singing ‘Streets of London. They are a very talented year indeed.

Year Six did not disappoint us either with six offerings of a more complex nature and a mainly classical selection beginning with Angel on Violin playing a concerto by Rieding. Scarlet, Nelson and Joshua followed with pieces from Bach, Latour and Clementi, Anna delighted us with a stunning piece for cello by WH Squire and Sophie finished with Allemande by Vivaldi on the violin. It’s worth mentioning that this was the last chance to see Year Six in a musical concert at St Aidan’s and I’m sure that the audience will agree that it was technically very impressive and inspiring to the younger players.

The evening was brought to a close with the Choir.

An evening like this is perhaps one of the greatest gifts that our children can give us and thanks go to the tireless Mrs Padel (who was assisted by a number of other staff members and Mr Kenner who accompanied several performers on the piano. All of the parents and children who attended are, I’m sure, very grateful for their efforts.
