The Reception class at St. Aidan’s is called Red class. The children enter Red class after attending St. Aidan’s Nursery or a different setting and this is the final year of the Foundation Stage before moving into Key Stage One.
In Red class we have a large colourful classroom and an outside area with a canopy which enables the children to have outdoor access even if the weather is bad.
The topics we cover over the year are ‘Me and my school’, ‘Light and Dark’, ‘Transport’, ‘Growth’, ‘Stories’ and ‘Water’. The topics are included into all areas of the curriculum including: English, Maths, Art, D.T, ICT, Science and music. We teach Literacy using the Ruth Miskin Literacy programme and teach daily maths lessons as a whole class and in small groups.
In Red class the children learn through play. Carefully chosen activities enable the children to make progress towards the Early learning goals.
We have lots of fun in Red class and the children love learning French in the summer term. Our visit to Hornsey Fire Station during our topic on ‘Water’ is always a success and something the children never forget. We enjoy lots of messy play in Red class and have very helpful parents who come in to help with cooking and turn-taking games.
