The Iron Man by Ted Hughes

Indigo class studied the Iron Man by Ted Hughes as part of a project based on a work by a significant author.

The book is about a mysterious figure that appears one night at the top of a cliff and steps off, spectacularly smashing into pieces on the beach below. Gradually it pieces itself together again and then disappears into the sea. Only the seagulls witnessed his arrival and departure. The story develops when large metal machinery starts disappearing from local farms; those remnants left behind are scarred by giant tooth mark.

Hogarth, the son of a local farmer, becomes part of the farmer’s efforts to solve the problems that the Iron Man poses. However through his humane intervention, peaceful solutions are achieved.

This novel served as a stimulus for model making, paintings of settings, metal menus and creative writing.
